NMA rejects sack of 16,000 medical doctors

The Nigerian Medical Association has rejected the sack of resident doctors by the Federal Govt which happened on Wednesday August 13th.

At a press briefing today in Abuja, the president of the NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe asked the federal government to withdraw its circular on the sack of the resident doctors and also reverse the directive
“NMA demands immediate withdrawal of the suspension circular and unconditional reinstatement of the so-called sacked resident doctors.

Government should show commitment on her part in resolving the current impasse with the NMA rather than resorting to punitive measures that will only further aggravate the already deplorable situation.

NMA condemns in totality the alleged presidential directive via the Federal Ministry of Health suspending Residency Training Programme in Nigeria,” the NMA President added.

The NMA president also stated that even if FG reinstates the resident doctors, they will still not call off their strike, which is over a month now, adding that the govt must meet its “24-point demand”.

Jonathan has worsen nigeria situation – Gov. Fashola

Governor Fashola expressed his deep displeasure over the current administration’s Presidency and its vice as well. He delivered a speech yesterday August 14th to mark the 50th birthday of former Bayelsa state Governor, Timipre Sylva in Abuja.

“Even recently, we all used to think that our National development was inhibited by the fact that we never had a university graduate as leader of any national government in an executive capacity. This perhaps alludes only faintly to some of what I have discussed about the elite consensus but it is not quite the same.

Thankfully, the myth for graduate leadership, desirable as it is has now been exploded. We now have two graduates, a Zoologist and an Architect at the helm of our National affairs and I think that the majority of Nigerians would tell you today that their lives are worse off today than they were 4 years ago. Clearly in my view there must be more to leadership than a University degree and educational qualification.

There are attributes such as character, vision, courage, empathy compassion and many more attributes that you simply would not find in a classroom or in a school.

They in the homes, in our communities and they are also in the value system of our society. Recently, our leadership has redefined empathy by inviting parents of abducted children, bereaved people to the presidential villa for commiseration. I find this really, really strange.

I find it truly unafrican. How those this sound to you? “Hello Neighbor, I heard that your children were abducted. Please come and see me at home so I can sympathize with you”.

This is my way of paraphrasing what has happened. As if this was not bad enough, the event has been followed by another rounds of lies, about whether or not they tried to give the bereaved parents money.

For me, it is a low point for leadership. It suggest the lack of empathy”

SHOCKING: Daughter, boyfriend kill mother, stuff body in box

The daughter of an American tourist slain
and stuffed into a suitcase at a $500 per night Bali hotel and the teenager’s boyfriend were charged with murder on Friday. Under Indonesian law, Heather Lois Mack, 19, and her 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaefer potentially face the death penalty by firing squad.

A suitcase containing the half-naked corpse of Sheila von Wiese-Mack, 62, of the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, Illinois, was found on Tuesday. The luggage had been wrapped in a garbage bag and left in a waiting taxi for two hours before being discovered, police said.

Witnesses told investigators that Mack seemed panicked when she allegedly left the suitcase and told a taxi driver to wait for a “go” sign, adding: “I’m getting my mom.” A security guard at the plush St. Regis Bali resort also said the weight of the silver suitcase had made him suspicious.

When the Mack and Schaefer did not return for two hours, the taxi driver called police. Bali Police Chief Inspector General J. Benny Mokalu told NBC News on Friday that six witnesses had been interviewed. Investigators were planning to speak to at least seven others. Chicago-based lawyer Michael Elkin has been hired by Mack.

Speaking to NBC Chicago before Mack was charged, Elkins said the allegations against the teen were untrue. He added that Mack was “hysterical” at times when they spoke on Tuesday. Both Mack and Schaefer are undergoing psychological and other tests, according to police.

Photos: OOU students on massive protest this morning, destroy property

Students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, are currently protesting in the state, demanding a reduction in their school fees. The students have barricaded the Presidential boulevard, the route leading to the office of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, saying they will not leave until the governor, who is said to be on his way to his office, addresses them.

The students were reportedly shot at and tear-gassed by soldiers this morning as they marched to the Governors office. After being tear-gassed, angry students started destroying public property. They had initially embarked on a peaceful protest, but turned violent after the teargas.

The aggrieved students are demanding a further reduction in their school fees days after Governor Amosun announced a reduction in school fees and said it would take effect from next academic session.

The students of the state owned school say they are not satisfied with the reduction, as it’s still too high and they want the new school fees to take effect from the current academic session.

The protest started yesterday and continued this morning…
