MUST READ: 80% Nigerian youths are unemployed – CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Thursday said 80 per cent of Nigerian youths are still unemployed.

This is despite repeated figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics stating that the Nigerian economy had been creating millions of jobs in the past years.

Only last week, the NBS announced that the economy created about 1.2 million jobs in 2013 fiscal year.

But the Special Assistant on Sustainable Banking, CBN, Dr. Aisha Mahmood, disclosed that unemployment was still a severe threat to Nigeria’s economy.

Mahmood spoke while delivering a paper on Nigerian Sustainable Banking Principle during the 2014 World Environment Day programme organised by the Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja.

She said, “As the population is growing, the resources that we all depend on, the food, energy, water, is declining. The demand for these resources will rise exponentially by the year 2030, with the world needing about 50 per cent more food, 45 per cent more energy and 30 per cent more water.

“In Nigeria, there is the issue of youth and employment. 70 per cent of the 80 million youths in Nigeria are either unemployed or underemployed. We are all witness to what happened recently during the immigration recruitment exercise and this is simply because 80 per cent of the Nigerian youth are unemployed.”

Mahmood noted that currently Nigeria’s economy is the largest in Africa, adding that the country is using fossil fuel to achieve this growth trajectory.

She stated that Nigeria’s economic growth was as a result of its abundant oil reserves, and warned that the flaring of gas from oil may negatively affect citizens in the country if not properly managed.

She said, “Nigeria has been flaring gas since the discovery of oil in the 1950s. We produce and burn about 20 billion cubic meters of gas annually and this is enough to meet our energy need. Remember we said we don’t have electricity, whereas we can provide electricity with this gas that we flare.

“And also when we burn this gas, we produce green house gases that affect our livelihood and the livelihood of people that live around that area.”

The CBN special assistant also lamented the high number of persons living below the poverty line in Nigeria as well as the about 120 million persons in the country that still lack access to electricity.

According to her, the above reasons were some key issues why the financial sector came together to develop and adopt the Nigerian Sustainable Banking Principle.

In her remarks, the Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam, explained that the 2014 WED was targeted to address climate change and the impact of sea level rise on the environment.

She said, “In Nigeria, the impacts of climate change are manifested by erosion and landslides in the East, drought and desertification in the North, rising sea levels in the coastal areas and flooding across the nation.

“The transformation agenda of Mr. President in the environment sector is aimed at addressing all forms of land degradation through specialised projects.”

Keshi: Boko Haram Affecting Eagles

–Eagles boss speaks on #BringBackOurGirls
campaign before Greece match

Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi admits the political tension back home is in the back of his and his players’ minds ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

“Directly it is not affecting us, but indirectly it is because some of us have family members around the places where all these are happening.

We have however resolved to go ahead with our business because we are representing Nigeria  and the African continent. We really do not want to put this is our heads albeit we know we have problems back home.We don’t want to show it that we are affected.

We want to play very well, achieve positive results that will make  Nigerians happy again,’said Keshi who confirmed what happened before the Greece game where some young girls carried the #BringBackOurGirls placard were not pre-planned. Each player was accompanied by a child at midfield with a white sign reading, in part, “#BringBackOurGirls,” a reminder of the more than 300 schoolgirls who were kidnapped from the Chibok Government Secondary School by Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria in April. About 272 are still missing.

But,according to Keshi,it wasn’t a planned form of activism. It was a spontaneous reaction from  Keshi when the Nigerian national team saw the children on the way to PPL Park, venue of the match.

“We just met them here,” Keshi said during the post-match news conference.

“Some of our family members are out there, and we are going on the pitch to represent Africa and Nigeria.

We saw the girls with the cards and the T-shirts, and we thought we should take them along to the pitch. We are all striving for the same purpose.”

Super Eagles Need Playmaker: Okocha

Former Nigeria skipper Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha has observed that Super Eagles lack a playmaker and will need one to do well at Brazil 2014.

The former Bolton Wanderers playmaker made this assertion after watching the Eagles draw 0-0 with Greece in a World Cup warm-up.

“Having critically watched our match last night (early Wednesday), we need a bit of depth in our midfield. Playmaker is inevitable, for possession/killer passes,” Okocha tweeted.

Another ex-Super Eagles star, Jonathan Akpoborie, has urged the team to have more self-belief.

“The players need confidence now to do well in Brazil, they just have to believe in themselves and I hope they get some of it from the friendly games,” Akpoborie toldAfricanFootball.com

He also said he would have wished Nosa Igiebor had made the trip to Brazil, but admitted the final squad was good overall.

“The coach has picked a good team for the World Cup and we all have to collectively support
the team as a nation,” he said.

“Personally, I think Nosa Igiebor should have been on the list because he keeps the ball very well. And his ball distribution is very good. He is a box-to-box player. That is over now anyway but all the Eagles need now is our support.”

Nigerians are simply Hypocrites – Psquare

Popular hip-hop artiste, Peter Okoye, has tongue lashed Nigerians for criticizing the musical video of Tiwa Savage by calling them hypocrites.

Peter said that why can’t Nigerians accept her the way she is compared to the once the likes of Rihanna and Beyoncé do in their videos.

Adding that Tiwa’s husband is not complaining and as such, she should be left alone to enjoy her life style.

Meanwhile, the creative director behind the ‘Wanted’ Video under her own outfit “Zinarts,” has hipped praises on Tiwa Savage commending her for a good job on the video and for giving her the opportunity to work with her on set.
